Revitalising Iced Matcha Latte

We love Matcha a little too… I won’t finish that sentence.
There’s no denying the comfort of a hot, frothy almond milk Matcha latte on a cold day; but with the yo-yoing Cape Town weather there have been a few afternoons where I’d prefer my pick-me-up more chilled than Snoop Dog.

Matcha is the powdered form of green tea leaves. This means that instead of discarding the leaves as you would with a normal cup of green tea, you’re now ingesting them. Matcha is super rich in antioxidants, has free radical-scavenging activity and encourages your body’s natural detoxification systems. We all know that green tea benefits are amazing, but when you consume matcha, you consume all of green tea’s benefits in the most concentrated form — and the health benefits are amplified!

Some people find matcha a little grassy in flavour and this is easily balanced out with a little vanilla and your sweetener of choice. You could create a vanilla syrup with vanilla seeds, a little sugar and water and add it to taste or just go the quick and easy route like we did today.

I love matcha when I feel a little sluggish and like my thoughts are still in bed while I’m walking around in the big bad city. For me, it’s a clearer caffeine energy than coffee. I get none of the anxiety and all of the focus. Matcha is said to make you feel “alert-calm” due to its mix of L-theanine and caffeine. L-Theanine is a relaxing and nondietary amino acid found pretty much exclusively in teas from the Camellia sinensis plant. By drinking matcha you can increase your levels of L-theanine and promote alpha waves, which lead to a state of relaxed alertness. L-theanine has been shown to benefit patients diagnosed with anxiety by increasing levels of dopamine in your brain.

Needless to say, it’s as addictive as coffee but hey, at least I’m a zen Energiser bunny and not a shakey mess of a little rabbit.

Recipe

Makes 2 cups

Ingredients
  • 2 cups Unsweetened Almond Milk (We used Almond Breeze)
  • 1 cup Ice
  • 1tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1tsp Matcha Powder
  • Honey, to taste
Instructions
  1. Place all ingredients in a blender, and blend on high speed until fully combined.
  2. Taste and adjust. If you find it too bitter, add a little more sweetener. If you’d like the consistency to be more pourable, add extra almond milk and pulse again.
  3. Enjoy immediately!

Notes:

  • Keep the ice separate and double the mixture, refrigerate and enjoy throughout the next 3 days.
